Guy Hedlund plays the Prodigal, George Nichols is the sheriff, Jack Pickford is the sheriff's son and Robert Harron is a young man at the post office. A fugitive saves the sheriff's son from drowning, but the sheriff arrests him anyway.

1. "The Modern Prodigal", A Story in Symbolism, is a short drama directed by D.W. Griffith. 3. "The Sunbeam" is a short drama directed by D. W. Griffith. A friendless bachelor and a lonely spinster have a frosty relationship, which only gets worse as a result of children's pranks. Then one day a tragic event and a friendly little girl known as Sunbeam cause a dramatic change.
4. "The Renunciation" is a short Western drama. A young woman arrives in a mining village and immediately causes rivalry between two long-time friends. One of them renounces his claim to the girl to avoid fighting, but the other one is determined to settle all scores by force.
5. "The Son's Return" is a short drama. The son returns to the country after making it rich in the big city. He decides to conceal his identity in order to surprise his folks, but this leads to unexpected consequences.
6. "Hide and Seek" is a short comedy.
7. "Her Terrible Ordeal" is a short crime drama. Robert Harron plays a man at the station waiting for a train.An office girl is locked in a vault by a passing salesman who becomes a robber. Her beau discovers her predicament, but cannot to unlock the door. The odds seem against the girl. Her man is desperate to find the manager, who left to catch a train and who is the only one that knows the combination. Will the race against the clock save the girl, who is running out of time and oxygen?
8. "The Cord of Life" is a short crime drama. George Gebhardt demands money from Charles Inslee, but is thrown out empty-handed and vows revenge. Then when Charles Inslee's wife Marion Leonard leaves their little girl alone for a moment George Gebhardt jumps in. He puts the child in a basket and lets it hang outside on a cord in such a way that when the window gets open, the child is bound to fall several floors to its death.
9. "The Violin Maker of Cremona" is a short drama. Arthur V. Johnson plays a party guest. The annual contest for the best violin turns serious when the winner is promised the hand of the town's beauty.
